Katie is a single woman 25 Years of age. She is usually very content, but is growing dissatisfied with her inability to land the right person for a meaningful relationship. She has tried almost everything, and is about to give up her search. Then a friend suggested she place a personal ad in the newspaper.
She had never given it much thought, because it sounded a bit risky. Her friend said she met her current boy friend that way. They seemed happy, so she decided to try it. She made out the ad, and placed it in the newspaper. It was anonymous, so she felt comfortable with the process.
The process was setup, so you decided if you wanted to meet the person or not. Meeting was at your own risk. She got plenty of responses to her ad through voice mail. She was particularly interested in one response. It sounded great to her, but she knew you could never tell about these things.
She emailed each other for a while, and then they moved to phone conversation. They sent full length photographs to each other, so they there would be no surprises. They decided to meet in the public library. They also agreed to depart if anything was not to their liking. They finally got to see each other.
Katie was impressed with the guy who called himself Larry. Initial impressions were that they were going to make an excellent couple. They agreed to meet again and this went on for a few weeks. About the fourth week in the relationship Larry began to act strange.
He seemed like he wanted to control everything Katie was doing. He called many times a day and would get very angry when she did not answer. At first she thought it was just a phase he is going through. But things began to escalate. He started hanging around her job and sitting outside her house.
She knew it was time to end the relationship. She told him to meet her in the same public library where all this had started and she told him it was over. She could tell he was angry, but he did not show it in the library. Soon after, she started receiving threatening phone calls from Larry.
He made no attempt to hide his identification. She decided it was time to report it to the police. The only evidence she had was her word. She knew the police would not act on just her word. The calls went on for several weeks until a friend suggested recording the calls. She knew that recorded calls could not be used as evidence unless the caller knew they were being recorded.
She also knew that Larry was so angry that he would not care if he were being recorded. So the next time he called, she said I am recording these calls so you better stop. He reacted as she predicted, with more anger. She let him talk, recorded it, and took it to the police. They arrested Larry for harassment.
If you are going to pursue a police case it helps to have the proper evidence. It can be videotape, written document or even a phone conversation. Police are bound to the letter of the law and will not risk violating anothers rights without evidence of a crime. Many criminals have gone free because of insufficient evidence or improperly collected evidence. If you are going to collect audio evidence, learn all you can. Take all threats serious.
