Contemporary bridal fashion is diverse and individualistic. The vast range of designs available means every bride can express her inner goddess but the variety can be confusing - antique lace,, chiffon, strapless, halter neck, satin or silk? The choices are endless, so Bride has put together a few guidelines to make finding your gown the ultimate shopping experience that it should be.
• Create a scrapbook filled with design, fabric and style ideas. Make sure you write down notes on designers and retailers who stock the styles you’re interested in.
• Leave yourself plenty of time. The alteration and fitting process can be lengthy so start making decisions about eight to 10 months before your wedding day.
• Weekends are often a busy time for designers so make a mid-week appointment if you can. If you make an appointment you will have the staff’s full attention as well as a more enjoyable and calm shopping experience. There is nothing worse than competing with four other people for fitting room space on a busy Saturday morning.
• Be sure you and your designer are on the same page. After all, your wedding gown is in their hands and you want to be sure you share the same vision.
• Try on a variety of styles so you get an idea of what looks good on you. Discuss with your designer what styles suit your body shape and try to pick something from within this range.
• Listen to the advice of your designer or dressmaker. You are paying for their professional expertise so take time to evaluate their opinions objectively.
• Avoid trends that will date quickly. You need to pick a gown that you’ll be happy to look at for many years to come.
• Find a style that suits your personality. The mood you want to create for your wedding can be reflected in your gown. For example you might want to create a modern, traditional, bohemian or vintage feel to the design and the day.
• Choose something you are comfortable in. Plunging back and necklines can look fantastic but if you are not comfortable in them you will be tempted to constantly adjust and fiddle with your dress - not a good look on your wedding day. Most importantly, be sure it’s the dress you want. All the advice you’re sure to get, delivered with the best intentions, from friends, family and designers can be deafening. Always remember, it’s your dress and your day and ultimately, it’s you who needs to be happy with the end result.
