Bingo started out as a mistake. Yes, one of the most popular and widely-loved games played today by literally millions of people, was an accident. Origins of the game can be traced back to someone in the 1530s to a lottery in Spain. This eventually migrated to North America in 1929 but was known as “Beano” and it was thanks to a slip-up by one man, who mistakenly called “Bingo” instead of “Beano,” that the beloved game as we know it today was born.
If you find yourself at a church function or community event you’ll be sure to find a game of Bingo going on. Bingo is even gaining in popularity at casinos, both online and in the physical sense.
Here are some popular Bingo Lingo terms you will need to know so that you can avoid any potentially embarrassing social errors.
False Alarm - If you’ve played Bingo, you will know that this happens frequently. It’s when someone calls Bingo, as a mistake (in other words, they don't have a full house or a line). Perhaps a player did not hear the caller correctly, or they really think they have a Bingo. It can happen.
Jumping the gun - This is when a player calls Bingo before they actually have one. A similar scenario to a false alarm!
Waiting - This is the term used for when a player just needs one more number before completing a Bingo. Oh, the suspense.
Caller - The person who calls out the numbers during the game.
Bingo lends itself to just about anyone. You can play for money or prizes, or just for fun and bragging rights. If you’re in it to win it, it’s best to not play more cards than you are able to manage. It is not uncommon for a Bingo player to have 30 cards spread out in front of them for a single game. If you are able to do this, by all means go for it, however be careful not to overstretch yourself as this could result in a stressful, penniless experience! Playing bingo on slower nights may also increase your chances of winning.

Remember it is considered rude to have loud conversations - with others, or on a cell phone - during the bingo game. It’s important that players are able to hear the caller clearly; unless of course you have chosen to play online bingo. Most importantly however, have fun!
