Once you get to grips with the rules, roulette is probably the easiest casino game that you can play, as each game tends not to last a very long time, meaning that you can earn your winnings in a short space of time. The first move you make is to place your bet, and there are a lot of different bets that you can place on a roulette wheel:
• Even chance bets are those placed on events where there are just two possible outcomes, and both are as likely as each other. This includes betting on red or black, odd or even or high and low; and the winnings paid out are equal to your stake, so if you bet £5, you win £5 and take back your original stake – total returns equalling £10.
• A straight up bet is a bet on a single number, and these are paid out at 35/1. On European wheels, there are the numbers 1-36 and zero; however on US tables, there is an additional number double-zero, meaning that the odds of winning are slightly lower.
• You can also place a split bet, whereby you place your chips on the line between two numbers. If either of the numbers comes up, you win at odds of 17/1. A similar type of bet to this is the corners bet, whereby you place your chips on the corner of 4 numbers and win at odds of 8/1.
There are a number of other bets that can be made in roulette; however the three mentioned above are the most common.
After all bets have been placed and counted, the croupier spins a white ball in the rim of a wheel whilst the carousel turns in the opposite direction. The ball eventually runs out of steam and comes to a stop in one of the number slots – this is the winning number. All winning bets are realised and then paid out in chips, which can then be exchanged for cash elsewhere in the casino.
