Craps is one of the noisiest and fun games that you can play at a casino, and one of the only games where being a spectator can be just as enjoyable as taking part in the game yourself. Only blackjack has better odds of winning than craps, and only roulette has more betting options, which makes the game very popular among casino and goers. Compared to the online casino boring, stony-faced game of poker, craps is pumped on adrenaline, non-stop and riveting, hence its popularity. A newcomer to the game will feel quite daunted at first, and probably a little intimidated by the number of people surrounding the table and the number of rules in the game, but after reading this article, you should feel more comfortable.
Your first roll (of two dice at the same time) is called the Come Out roll and if you roll 7 or 11, you instantly win, however if you roll 2, 3 or 12, that it Craps and you lose. Any other number becomes the Point and the dealer will place a puck marked ‘on’ above the Point number printed on the cloth.
The basic objective of craps is for the shooter (the person rolling the dice) to roll the Point number before he or she throws a 7. If they are successful, they and their fellow bettors win and the round is over, however if not, they lose and the round is over. Any number other than the Point or 7 simply means that the round continues until either is hit.
The game gets complicated when you consider the number of betting options available. The simplest type of bet to place is a Pass bet, which is a bet placed before the Come Out roll. If 7 or 11 come out on the Come Out roll, you win; and if the Point is rolled before a 7, you win. This bet is paid at even odds. You lose if the shooter throws Craps or throws a 7 before the Point. You can also place a Don’t Pass bet, which works in the opposite way to a Pass bet.
A Come or Don’t Come bet works in the same way as the above, but are designed for people who arrive late at the table. You win if the next roll shows 7 or 11 and lose if it shows Craps. If neither, the roll becomes the Come Point.
Odds bets act as backup bets on those mentioned above, are limited to 2x or 3x the original bet, and pay out at true odds (odds that reflect the probability of the roll occurring). Pass odds and Come odds pay out at 2:1 on a roll of 4 or 10, 3:2 on 5 or 9 and 6:5 on 6 or 8. Don’t Pass odds and Don’t Come odds pay out 1:2 on 4 or 10, 2:3 on 5 or 9 and 5:6 on 6 or 8.
