If you want to be a conscientious camper, the best thing you can do is to ensure that you don't leave a trace of you behind when your camping trip is over. In order to do that, there are some things that you can do. The best choice is to plan ahead, and make sure that you will be able to take back everything that you take into the forest with you.
Campers who are serious about camping make every effort not to even leave any waste products behind. Other problem items are things like water bottles and food bags, which can be a real concern for wildlife because they can ingest them and get very sick. Conscientious campers take the time to make sure that they don't harm the wildlife that they come in contact with or the environment with the items that they bring to the forest or other area where they camp.
You should also hike and camp only on solid trails and in approved areas. You don't want to go destroying things because you decide that you want to camp somewhere more remote. Have respect for warning signs and signs that ask you to remain on the trail – they're there for a reason.
Sometimes when you're camping you'll run into other campers and visitors. Be respectful of them and don't try to get in their way, cause them problems, or make them leave. Having respect for all creatures is very important to being a good camper. Not everyone will follow the rules, but that doesn't mean that you ever have to stoop to their level. Instead, you can take the high road and choose to remove yourself from a situation where other campers are causing problems rather than escalate a tense time. It's the safest and best thing to do.
