Wales is quickly establishing it’s self as one of the best holiday destinations in Britain. With three stunning national parks, dramatic coastline, vibrant cities and a sweeping country side it’s easy to see why.
Snowdonia National Park is perhaps the most famous destination in Wales. There are 100 lakes, 90 mountain peaks, 37 miles of pristine coastline and beaches, moors and wetlands. A rainbow beetle and lily you won’t find anywhere else on earth and of course there is the tallest mountain in England and Wales.
Snowdonia has been renowned for walking since Victorian times. Since then the main mountains of Snowdonia have been well trodden.There are plenty of paths on Snowdon, the Glyders, and the Carneddau but the surrounding mountains are often quieter and equally spectacular. For example, Carnedd Moel Siabod with its dramatic arête, Cader Idris in the south of the Park and the Rhinogs, also further south, with the 'Roman Steps' - a mediaeval packhorse trail rising high up to cross a mountain pass. These walks all require mountaineering and are dependent on the weather.
For slightly easier walks that are not dependent on the walkers skill or the weather, the wealth of footpaths in the lower hills and valleys which provide all day walks with spectacular views of mountains without the same effort. They include a great variety of landscapes including woodland, forestry, farmland, moorland, rivers and lakes. As well as the natural landscape there is a wealth of prehistory and history to be seen, such as burial chambers (Capel Garmon), Welsh castles, ancient lead mines (Gwydir Forest) and atmospheric slate quarries (too many areas to mention).
Apart from the amazing national parks Wales has so much more to offer. Explore the ancient castles like those in Dolbadarn, Castell-y-Bere and Caernarfon. Walk the battlements of these medieval marvels and immerse your self in its rich history. From the excitement of the old to the thrills of the new where you can visit one of the many theme parks across Wales. With a whole variety of rides on offer there is sure to be something to keep both old and young like entertained.
